About Us

What is our
Goal?

The goal of The Recycling Lottery is to raise funds for charities and to make the deposit return scheme more attractive to consumers. This, in turn, benefits the environment and helps countries achieve their recycling targets. We are proud to pursue these goals with a lottery that does not affect the revenues of other lotteries nor contribute to problematic gambling.

The Recycling Lottery is a one-of-a-kind, proven concept in Norway, and has been operational for over 10 years. Together with Tom, the market leader in the field of reverse vending machines, we are accelerating business development in markets with existing deposit return schemes and new markets that are in the process of developing such schemes

Do it the right way

Gambling is not
Encouraged

The Recycling Lottery does not encourage gambling, and users solely deposit value of used beverage containers as a stake. Participation with regular means of payments, cash, payment cards or similar, is NOT possible. Furthermore, there are no ‘near misses’, no re-entering of winnings, or any other factors often associated with gambling. The lottery has not had a single case linking it to gambling addiction in over 10 years of operations in Norway.

The lottery does not compete with other lotteries, state or private, nor does it cannibalise on their revenue. It uses a unique form of payment (used beverage containers), derived from secondary raw materials. This is unique for The Recycling Lottery.

The lottery has been operational in Norway since 2008 and in Finland since 2011, with Lottery licenses granted by the authorities to the Norwegian Red Cross and Finnish Save the Children. New markets would be able to choose a charity or multiple charities that they would like to work with.

Our success

How do we
do it?

The key to the lottery’s success is what we call ‘donation with a twist’. Analysis shows that donation, on its own, generates, at most, a fourth, of what the inclusion of The Recycling Lottery would do, through the reverse vending machines. A fully operational Recycling Lottery in any market will generate millions of euros annually for charitable causes.

Olav Thon Group, Playsafe Norway AS and Tom Systems ASA own the patent for the Recycling Lottery technology. This technology is available to other licensed reverse vending machine manufacturers than Tomra as well.

It is important to note that The Recycling Lottery can appear and function differently in another market, than how it does in Norway. The charity or charities that are beneficiaries, the consumer journey, compliance to local legislation, as well as where the reverse vending machines are placed, could all be configured to the requirements of your potential market.

In Norway, The Recycling Lottery is an environmentally friendly lottery where you can stake your deposit return value on a reverse vending machine, and have the chance to win prizes of 5, 10, 100 or 100 000 Euros. The charity that benefits from the lottery, in Norway, is the Norwegian Red Cross
